Meditation has been woven into my life since childhood, like a quiet anchor amidst the waves of change.
I grew up watching my mother turn to meditation during life’s hardest moments—grieving the loss of my brother, uprooting our family from Uganda during the 1972 exodus, and starting over in Canada with eight children. No matter how chaotic life became, she found solace in her daily practice. It was her refuge, her steady ground, the one thing that remained constant.
At the time, I didn’t fully understand the depth of what she was doing. It was simply part of her daily rhythm. But years later, when I found myself navigating my own storms, I began to realize just how powerful mindfulness could be.
An Unexpected Crossroad
Twelve years ago, my life took an unexpected turn. I became a single mother, raising two young daughters on my own. The weight of uncertainty felt overwhelming, and more than anything, I worried about them.
I wanted to give them a strong foundation—to help them grow into confident, resilient young women who truly accepted themselves. I searched for ways to support them, pouring my energy into learning and growing so I could guide them through life’s challenges.
I trained as a Life Coach, thinking that was the key to helping them. But even with all the tools I had, something was still missing. I could feel it, but I couldn’t quite name it.
So I kept searching.
And eventually, I found Mindfulness.
The Shift That Changed Everything
At first, I saw mindfulness as something I could teach my daughters—something they could use to manage stress and navigate life’s uncertainties. But as I delved deeper, I realized something crucial:
To truly understand mindfulness, you have to practice it yourself.
So I did.
The more I practiced, the more aware I became. I started noticing my own patterns—how I reacted to stress, how I carried the weight of worry, how I held onto things that no longer served me.
Slowly, I began to change.
I became less reactive. I felt more grounded. The overwhelm that once consumed me started to ease.
And as I changed, so did my daughters.
I watched them flourish, growing into themselves with more ease, confidence, and joy. Our relationship deepened in ways I hadn’t imagined, built on a foundation of presence, acceptance, and love.
That’s the power of mindfulness—it doesn’t just change how we handle challenges; it transforms how we connect with ourselves and those we love.
